Potassium is an essential element in the human body for various functions. The main function of potassium is to regulate nerve impulse so when the body is lacking in this nutrient various processes will not work properly. This is an often overlooked nutrient which should not be forgotten when planning a diet of food regime. The recommended dietary intake for potassium is around 100mmol/day which is equivalent to 4000mg however the average westerner consumes just half this recommended daily allowance.
All foods actually contain a small amount of potassium as it is one of the essential building blocks of life. Some food which have a high potassium content are various nuts (like almonds and pistachios), bananas, parsley, chocolate (at last a benefit!), avocados and bran. The symptoms of an insufficient potassium level in your system would include fatigue, weakness of muscles, cardiac arrhythmia and kidney dysfunctions. Check back soon for our next instalment of the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
